So glad I'm not a princess.

Out of curiosity, does anyone out there think that the Prince Harry fiasco has gotten out of hand? Typically I ignore all the drama of the British Royal family but, since it’s been the lead story on Drudge for the past two days, it’s becoming more difficult to ignore.

Although it was poor taste to wear a Nazi uniform to a costume party, I find it hard to believe that it was anything more than immature judgment and “joke” gone sour. Besides, at a costume party with friends, who says you have to dress up like the hero every time? Why can’t you dress up like the villain? But, then again, maybe there’s a different standard for you when you’re a prince. Forget those childhood fantasies! Prince Harry’s predicament sheds light on the reality of it all.

I think there's a difference between a villain such as Dracula or Frankenstein and the Nazis. Britain was hurt deeply by the Nazis and, from what I've heard, for those that had to live through WWII, it is still a very horrible and vivid memory.

A good friend of mine is part Jewish. He had a VERY different take on this. http://mod-blog.blogspot.com/2005/01/fascist-fashion-of-prince-harry.html

Basically, think of it this way. I hold a costume party and Kevin shows up as a Middle Eastern terrorist. That's poor taste and a "joke" gone sour. Someone who lost their neighbor in the 9/11 terrorist attack holds a costume party and Kevin shows up in the same outfit... that's more like what Prince Harry did.

Ultimately, I agree with you Dan. The only exception I have to your analogy lies in the fact that Harry went to a private party where the attendees were he peers. They weren't people who personally experienced the indescribable horrors of Hitler. And, I don't know if you realize this or not but Harry did issue an apology that he should NOT have worn that costume and he was sorry to offend so many people. I guess I'm just surprised that his apology is not being accepted and people aren't moving on.

It was a COSTUME party, for crying out loud. Yes, I realize that the Nazis did horrible things, but so did pirates, and I doubt that anyone would have cared if Harry showed up to the party in a do-rag and an eye patch with a parrot on his shoulder. Nazis killed Brits (as well as Americans). Yanks and Johnny Rebs killed each other, too, but no one makes a fuss over the costumes during battle reenactments and Southern balls. Just because a person uses a particular outfit at a costume party doesn’t mean he embraces the ideas of the people who the outfit represents. We live in such a hypersensitive society worldwide.

Yes indeed...it is so much better to be someone of no importance! That is a better freedom than anyone like Prince Harry has!

Poor taste....but probably not too great parenting either, in my opinion...he lost the better parent. His dad is a few bricks shy of a load too...so what can one expect. But when you are royalty, whether you like it or not...you live in a glass house of sorts! With great wealth comes great responsibility...he will be wealthy someday, if not considered so today. No one gets a free ride in life...and we certainly do not get to choose all the circumstances of our lives either.

I personally do not see why they would refuse to go see any place where Jews were gassed...many Christians were also done away with there! Money is not an issue so why not? If it makes others in the world feel better. It is not too much to ask. Besides don't we live in a country and world rapidly loosing any sense of humor they ever had? But we all must do what we can to maintain peace! So much as lieth in us anyway!

For anyone who's still interested (if anyone's even reading this strand anymore!), the most recent news on this topic is that European governments are now seeking to band all Nazi symbolism and expression. While this feat would be difficult to accomplish in the U.S. (because of staunch freedom of speech rights), it will not be as difficult to do in Europe and Brittain.
